Case Study: Lewis Sports Centre

Overview

Lewis Sports Centre in Stornoway required a modern lighting and audio solution for its gym and strength-training areas. The objective was to create a more distinctive, energetic training environment while providing clear and consistent audio throughout the space.

The completed installation combines colour-changing feature lighting with a distributed ceiling-speaker system, creating an immersive atmosphere without allowing equipment or visible technology to dominate the interior.

The Project

Feature Lighting

A combination of linear and geometric feature lighting was installed across the gym. The lighting design uses bold illuminated ceiling forms and vertical light lines to define individual areas and reinforce the facility’s contemporary identity.

The system can introduce different colours and moods across the space. Green lighting creates an immersive atmosphere around the functional-training area, while red lighting adds intensity to the free-weight zone. Cooler blue and white tones complement the main resistance-equipment area.

Positioning the fittings around ceiling features, mirrors and equipment helps the light feel integrated into the architecture rather than added as an afterthought. Reflections from the mirrored walls also extend the visual effect and increase the apparent depth of the gym.

Distributed Audio Solution

A distributed audio system using ceiling-mounted speakers was installed to provide consistent sound coverage throughout the facility.

Using multiple speakers across the ceiling produces a more even listening level than relying on a small number of high-output loudspeakers. This reduces excessively loud areas while maintaining clear background music across the different training zones.

The discreet ceiling installation also:

Keeps speakers clear of gym equipment.

Integrates naturally with the existing ceiling.
Supports a comfortable and consistent member experience.

The Outcome

The completed project has transformed the gym into a more dynamic and engaging training environment. The feature lighting gives the facility a distinctive visual identity and allows different moods to be created across the workout areas.

At the same time, the distributed ceiling-speaker system provides balanced audio coverage without introducing bulky equipment into the space. Together, the two systems improve atmosphere, functionality and user experience while complementing the gym’s modern equipment and finishes.
